What Online Nursing Schools Can Do For You

By Laura LC

The profession of nursing is a demanding one. As the general population ages and veteran nurses are retiring, more of them are needed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that the employment of registered nurses alone will go up 15 percent over the next decade. Enrollment in nursing classes and programs did go up nearly 4 percent in 2016, but there remains high demand for both nurses and nursing students.

Hospitals and many other medical establishments are trying to address this shortage by increasing funding for nurse education, as well as expanding opportunities for them. Modern nurses now have more educational pathways and potential degrees than ever before, and online nursing degrees are one route that many are choosing to go through.

Online nursing programs let students enjoy a lot of options in how they might finish their degree in a manner that is timely, convenient, and cost-effective. Online nursing degrees mean that students can pursue their degrees even while working or just so that they can get their education for a cheaper price. Getting a nursing degree online might mean launching a new career or even helping you move ahead with something that you’re already in. You can hone your skills and even explore specializations all without having to give up a few years of life.

Nursing programs can cover any level of degree, be it associate, bachelor, masters, graduate, or doctoral. Bachelor’s degrees are still the most popular kind, since they are the one most in demand for the majority of nursing positions. RNs can use online nursing work to move ahead in their education by finishing either a bachelor’s or even a master’s degree.

Online nursing degrees do still contain clinical components. Students typically finish this work at either a community hospital or a local medical provider. RNs who are already employed might be able to include the hours they already work. Online nursing schools usually also offer options which on-campus programs don’t, like cheaper tuition and more schedule flexibility. A lot of online programs are great for busy professionals who are working around their current schedules. Other programs might be accelerated or intensive in order to get a nurse educated and into the medical field.

An associate nursing degree online usually needs 90 credits, taking a year or two to finish. Some finish faster by going over a full course load every semester or even taking summer courses. Completing a clinical rotation isn’t usually necessary, but you’d still have to pass the NCLEX-RN exam after finishing the program to become an RN.

The bachelor’s online path is more popular since it offers specializations. It might take three to four years to finish, but intensive and accelerated courses can speed this up. The BSN is certainly in higher demand than ADNs.

Now that you’ve read this article, you know what online nursing schools might be able to offer you if you’re looking to either enter this necessary and noble profession or just advance your career if you are already in the field.

Understanding Nursing School Prerequisites And How To Obtain Them

By Laura LC

Nursing is one of the fastest growing careers around the world and the demand is extremely high. If you have a degree in nursing you are almost guaranteed a job when you graduate and the salary is nothing to complain about either, especially when you consider how long it takes to get a degree. However, many people just aren’t sure what nursing school prerequisites are and how long it will take for them to finally get a degree.

If you already have a bachelors degree in the field of science you are a step ahead of the rest. There are many programs around the country that have been created with you in mind. They significantly reduce the number of classes that you need to become a nurse. Many people are able to get their degree in nursing in as little as 18 months, but of course this depends on the amount of time that you will be able to dedicate to your education.

One of the great things about this type of program is that they can be tailored around your personal schedule. Most people that already have a bachelors degree and are looking to make a career move, work full time and may even have a family to take care of. These programs will allow for you to continue your life as needed, while giving you the flexibility to get the majority of your education online. This means that you can do your homework and study when you have the time available. You can also take courses when they are convenient for you. While many programs in other fields boast similar qualities, this is actually very unique to this field largely due to the extremely high demand.

Being that you already have a bachelors degree you will be able to jump right into the nursing school prerequisites. This means that you will not have to worry about taking any general education classes. Every class that you will take will be focused completely on getting you one step closer to being a registered nurse. Not only does this save you a great deal of time, but it will also save you a lot of money.

It is, however, important to remember that you will need to take your classes in a certain order so that you can smoothly transition from one stage to the next. Many classes require that you have already taken other classes first. The key is to work closely with an academic advisor to ensure that you are progressing in the most efficient and effective means possible. Taking the wrong classes can lead to you having to wait a semester or longer before you can move forward with obtaining your degree.

If you have not yet obtained a bachelors degree, the nursing school prerequisites are going to be a little different. This does not mean, however, that you will have to spend many years working towards your degree. There are many technical colleges around the country that have created programs that are tailored to your needs. You can find programs that will not require you to take any lower level classes other than what is absolutely necessary to obtain the skills that will be needed later in the program.

For example, many bachelors degrees require that you take a certain number of art, history and social science courses to meet your general education requirements. Some colleges will let you test out of these, especially when it comes to any math requirements. They may also give you credit for life experience if you can show that you have experience in these areas simply from raising a family or the jobs that you have had in the past. It is important to look at all of the options available to ensure that you do not have to waste time or money on classes that you do not really need.

Other programs will simply test you in a variety of areas to see where you actually stand academically. This could include a math test to determine what your current level of ability is. For example, if you took calculus in high school, it probably isn’t necessary for you to fulfill the requirement of being at a college level in Algebra. Every program is different, as well as each school, so it is important to take the time to understand the differences that may exist. This is especially true if you are looking for a accelerated program that will get you working in your chosen field as soon as possible.

There are a number of classes that will be required of you, no matter where you begin. Some of these include human development, bio-statistics, microbiology, nutrition and anatomy and physiology. You can expect that all of your classes dedicated to the field of nursing will be extremely focused on the science behind the workings of the human body. If you do not enjoy science then this likely is not the field for you, but if you have a passion for learning, chances are you are taking the right step towards your future.

Regardless of where you begin, you will be able to find programs that are able to be completed mostly online. This gives you a great deal of flexibility when trying to manage your personal responsibilities while trying to improve your life. There will be classes that absolutely must be done in person due to their nature, but an experienced academic advisor should be able to explain exactly what you can expect from the program.

You do want to be sure that you take the time to fully investigate the schools that are available to you. One thing that is very important is how the school’s nursing program rates against others. There have been instances where a school eventually lost the accreditation to offer nursing degrees because they weren’t meeting basic requirements. Be sure that the school you pick has a great reputation in the medical field before you make your decision.

You should also look into the job placement rates that their alumni report. The field of nursing is so high in demand that the vast majority of the students should find work before they have even graduated. However, if they are not properly training their students, they may not retain that employment in the long term. Look into not only how many people were employed after graduation, but also how many still had employment 5 plus years down the line. This can tell you a lot about what you can expect when you finally obtain your degree. There is nothing worse than working hard to get your education only to find that you are not employable.

Do not pick a school because they offer the fastest program or the lowest tuition. Do your own investigating and thoroughly compare your options. Every school is different and some are better for others depending on your personal situation. Take the time to make an informed decision, remembering that your future is at stake.

The nursing school prerequisites that will be required of you depend on where you currently are with your education and the program you choose. This is just one step in understanding the entire process. The next is to contact the schools available to you so that you can fully understand what will be expected of you before you commit to heading back to class.

The Convenience of Online Nursing Schools

By Laura LC

Do you want to get a job in the nursing field? If you are interested in working in the nursing industry, you will need to attend a specific nursing school to get a degree so that you can take on the position you’ve always dreamed of and earn a very nice salary. Choosing to get involved in this type of field is a fantastic idea because there is such a great demand for professionals that provide nursing services. There will always be patients in need of health services, so you will always have many opportunities to find great jobs that you enjoy and pay well.

If you want to be a nurse who cares for the needy and you want to go to school to get a degree but are concerned about not having enough time for classes, online nursing schools are available. These schools are convenient for those with busy schedules. You may need to continue working to support your family while you are attending classes to get a degree. The job you currently have may not pay as well, which could be one of the many reasons you are looking forward to getting a job as a nurse where you can earn more and would no longer need to struggle.

These different online nursing schools offer that added convenience to both women and men who want to pursue their dreams but still have other things to handle in their personal lives.  Especially if they are supporting their families or they have children to take care of throughout the day. Online learning allows these individuals to take classes and study at home instead of constantly commuting back and forth to school. The online schooling is more self-paced, so you would be able to get your work done at times that work best for you rather than always worrying about attending class at the same time on the same days each week.

How to Pick the Right Online School

If attending online nursing school sounds like something you want to do, you need to make sure that you are choosing the right school to attend in the first place. There are many online schools providing classes for those looking to get into the nursing field, so doing as much extensive research as you possibly can is a must. The first thing you need to figure out before selecting a school is the exact type of career you want to have in this specific field. There are a lot of different jobs you can take on with the right degree, such as a registered nurse (RN) and a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

Making a Decision on Your Nursing Career

Before making this decision, you should find out exactly what types of tasks you would be responsible for if you were to become one of these types of nurses. For example, licensed practical nurses are considered basic nurses that provide different services to patients, which may include administering medication, keeping a watchful eye on a patient who feeds through a feeding tube, and even helping with different tests that are administered. You will take on a lot of responsibilities as a licensed practical nurse, however, you will need to take on even more responsibilities as a registered nurse.

A registered nurse can provide nursing services in several different types of environments, including homes of patients receiving at-home care, hospitals, and even doctor’s offices. Some registered nurses choose to work at assisted living facilities where patients are unable to care for themselves and may need additional support to do different things. However, others work with younger patients and some even work in the labor and delivery unit where they are helping patients during labor. If these are some of the things you hope to do in the future, becoming a registered nurse may be the best decision for you.

Starting the Search For the Right Online School

After deciding what type of nursing career that you would like to have in the future, you can begin the search for a reputable online school that has a lot to offer in terms of education and hands-on experiences that will be provided to help you during the learning process. You need to search for online nursing schools that offer the programs you are most interested in taking, while at the same time finding out what many of the other students are saying about their own experiences at these different schools. This involves reading as many reviews on these online schools as you possibly can. Knowledge is power…especially in education. It is important to find a school with instructors who want to help you and guide you on the right path because they want you to become successful in everything you choose to do.

If you are not receiving the support you need throughout the learning process, it may be far more difficult for you to finish your classes, receive a degree, and then get the job you want to have. It is for that exact reason that it is so crucial for you to take your time looking through some of the different online schools, taking virtual tours, reading through the FAQ section of their websites, and even speaking with a counselor at these different schools to help with your decision. It may take a few weeks before you finally narrow down your options and come to a conclusion as to which of the online schools you are going to choose based on what is being offered to you.
