bathroom phone use risks

In a world where scrolling through social media from the bathroom has become as common as, well, using the bathroom itself, a new study shines a light on the potential risks of this not-so-surprising habit. Conducted at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the study involved 125 adults undergoing routine colonoscopies. The findings? A staggering 66% of participants admitted to using their smartphones while sitting on the throne.

And surprise, surprise—43% of those folks had hemorrhoids. Coincidence? Not quite.

Younger adults seem to be the biggest offenders, with smartphone users averaging 55.4 years old, compared to 62.1 for non-users. What are they doing in there? Reading news articles and scrolling through social media, of course.

But here’s where it gets interesting: the study found that those who used their phones while on the toilet had a 46% higher risk of developing hemorrhoids. Yes, you read that right. Sitting for too long, combined with the endless scroll, puts a lot of pressure on those delicate anal tissues. Smartphone use on the toilet has been linked to this troubling increase.

And let’s talk numbers. Smartphone users were five times more likely to spend over five minutes in the bathroom compared to their non-phone-using counterparts. That’s not just a casual visit; that’s a mini-vacation with a side of pain. Hemorrhoids are a common gastrointestinal complaint impacting millions annually.

Smartphone users are five times likelier to linger in the bathroom for over five minutes—turning quick trips into mini-vacations.

Half of these users didn’t even link their phone time to their prolonged bathroom stints. Spoiler alert: it’s not the toilet’s fault.

With hemorrhoids being one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the U.S., this study raises eyebrows. Millions seek treatment every year, and now it turns out that your beloved smartphone could be adding to the problem.
