Every year, millions of older Americans face the flu season with their sleeves rolled down and a shrug of indifference. It’s remarkable, really. A staggering 42% of folks over 50 haven’t bothered with updated flu or COVID vaccines in the past six months.
Why? Well, for some, it’s simple. They just don’t think they need it. A whopping 28% of seniors over 50 skipped the flu shot because they felt it wasn’t necessary. The same goes for 29% who passed on the COVID vaccine. Can you believe it?
The flu vaccination rates for seniors aged 65 and older have actually dropped. In 2024, only 67.1% rolled up their sleeves, down from 70.5% in 2019. If you’re in the 50-64 age group, good luck. The vaccination rates are pathetically low, with only 20% for COVID-19 and 42% for flu. Vaccination reduces the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death among older adults, which is a critical point many seem to overlook. Unfortunately, only 34.9% of individuals aged 65 and older received a flu vaccine in the 2018-2019 season, showing a concerning trend in vaccine acceptance.
Seniors are skipping vaccines—only 67.1% of those 65+ got the flu shot in 2024, down from 70.5% in 2019.
Meanwhile, the older crowd—those 75 and up—seems to be a bit more cautious, with vaccination rates at 76% for flu.
But it’s not just apathy. Concerns about side effects play a role too. Nineteen percent of seniors who didn’t get the flu shot were worried about adverse effects.
And let’s not forget the skeptics who think vaccines aren’t effective. Eighteen percent felt that way about the flu shot, while 19% had the same doubts about the COVID jab.
Family influence is a sneaky factor here. If nobody in your family gets vaccinated, why should you? It’s like a game of chicken, and many are just waiting for someone to flinch.
