The DR Congo is in the midst of a cholera crisis that’s spiraling out of control. Over 58,000 suspected cases have hit the nation from January to mid-October 2025. That’s right—58,000. And more than 1,700 lives have been lost. This isn’t just a bad year; it’s the worst cholera outbreak the country has seen in over 25 years. The case fatality rate is above 3%, far exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended target of below 1%. Talk about a public health disaster.
The DR Congo faces its worst cholera outbreak in 25 years, with over 58,000 suspected cases and 1,700 deaths.
Why is this happening? Well, let’s start with the basics: clean water. Only 35% of the population has access to basic drinking water services. That’s a shocking number. Sanitation? Even worse—just 16% of people have basic facilities.
And then there’s conflict. Ongoing violence and mass displacement are like pouring gasoline on a fire. Add climate disasters like flooding, and it’s a recipe for chaos. The outbreak is doubling the average annual caseload from the past five years, highlighting the severity of the situation. In fact, significant disease burden remains high in current outbreak countries, requiring multisectoral control measures.
Cholera has spread to 20 of the 26 provinces, with hotspots in South Kivu and Tshopo. Urban areas like Kinshasa aren’t safe either; the disease is creeping in. Young adults aged 15-24 are especially affected, proving that this isn’t just an “old folks’ problem.” The young and the restless are in serious danger.
The government has rolled out a Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan for 2023-2027. Great idea, but let’s be honest—funding is limited, and humanitarian presence is lacking.
Meanwhile, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has treated over 35,800 cholera patients, which is impressive but still a drop in the bucket. Vaccination efforts have reached over 22,000 people, but that’s not enough. Gaps in timely access to care are causing preventable deaths.
The situation is dire. The DR Congo needs action, and it needs it fast.
