They tested 43 hair extension samples, both synthetic and bio-based human hair, and guess what? Nearly every single one contained hazardous chemicals. Yikes.
In fact, they found 48 chemicals that are on major hazard lists, including a dozen flagged under California’s Proposition 65 for cancer and birth defects. Talk about a beauty blunder that could cost you more than just your paycheck! Significantly, all but two samples contained dangerous substances. The two “safe” ones were actually labeled non-toxic. The rest? Not so much.
Among the culprits are flame retardants and phthalates, which were found in both types of products. And let’s not forget the toxic organotins, which popped up in nearly 10% of samples. Some even exceeded European health limits. Imagine that!
