medical group opposes transgender surgeries

In a world where choices often come with hefty consequences, the debate over gender change surgeries for minors has taken a contentious turn. Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) stepped into the fray, recommending that gender-affirming surgeries be delayed until the age of 19. This is a big deal. It marks a departure from the consensus of major medical organizations that have previously supported gender-affirming care for minors.

So, what’s the reason? Well, apparently, ASPS has some concerns about the evidence surrounding mental health improvements after such surgeries. They cited that the evidence supporting such care is of “low quality, low certainty.”

ASPS cites concerns about the evidence linking gender-affirming surgeries to mental health improvements.

But wait, it gets more complicated. While ASPS is throwing up caution signs, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Endocrine Society are still waving the flag for gender-affirming care. Talk about a mixed message!

Meanwhile, 38% of transgender youth aged 13-17 live in states that are busy banning best practice medical and surgical care. That’s a staggering number, and it leaves many feeling stranded. In fact, approximately 146,300 transgender youth have lost or are at risk of losing access to gender-affirming care.

In the legislative arena, lawmakers have been busy filing over 126 bills aimed at restricting access to gender-affirming care. Some of these bills even propose criminal penalties for health professionals and parents. It’s like a game of “who can make it harder for kids to get the care they need.” As a result, a significant number of transgender youth are facing the threat of losing access to necessary care.

Now, let’s talk ethics. ASPS has raised some eyebrows by distinguishing the ethical concerns surrounding gender-related surgeries for minors from other plastic surgeries.

They point to the irreversible nature of these procedures and the potential for lifelong complications. With minors still figuring out their identities, is it fair to make such permanent choices? The expected benefits are uncertain, while potential harms could linger for a lifetime.
