reproductive health safety collapsing

America’s reproductive health safety net is crumbling, and it’s not just a minor tear—it’s a gaping hole. The 2025 Federal Budget Reconciliation Law is expected to add 10 million more uninsured people over the next decade. That’s a staggering number. Eight million women of reproductive age currently rely on Medicaid, a lifeline that now hangs by a thread due to new work and verification requirements. Oh, and let’s not forget the end of ACA Marketplace subsidy enhancements in 2025. It’s a recipe for disaster.

America’s reproductive health safety net is collapsing, threatening millions with the loss of vital Medicaid support and access to care.

For many women, the cost of birth control is no joke. One in five uninsured women of reproductive age had to stop using it last year because they simply couldn’t afford it. That’s four times the rate of women with Medicaid or private insurance. Meanwhile, cuts to Planned Parenthood and Title X clinics threaten the access that women desperately need for affordable contraception and STI care. Combined effects of Medicaid payment bans could lead to clinic closures and cutbacks in contraceptive care and STI services, worsening the situation.

Things only get worse from there. Over 19 million women live in “contraceptive deserts,” where clinics are nowhere to be found. Some folks have to travel 60–100 miles to reach the closest one. The absence of staff to move money and provide guidance threatens the collapse of the system that supports reproductive health. Nearly half of rural hospitals operate at financial losses, making it even harder to maintain reproductive health services.

And when these clinics close, it’s a double whammy. Rural populations, already struggling, are hit hardest. Title X clinics often provide essential services like cancer screenings and STI testing, and if they shut down, the barriers to care skyrocket.

Policy moves aren’t helping either. Initiatives like Project 2025 threaten to cut off Medicaid funding to providers like Planned Parenthood. The proposed gag rule? Just another way to make sure women stay in the dark. It’s ridiculous.

The fallout from all this is staggering. More unintended pregnancies and higher maternal mortality rates are on the horizon, especially for Black, Indigenous, and rural women. Every dollar spent on family planning saves seven in Medicaid costs. Yet, the safety net keeps fraying, and few seem to care. Where’s the alarm?
