indoor air quality concerns

In the cozy glow of candlelight, many find comfort and a splash of ambiance, but what lurks beneath that flickering flame? For the candle-loving Danes, the answer is a staggering 5.8 kilograms of candle wax per person each year. That’s right—six bags of sugar worth of wax, filling homes with sweet scents while also pumping out pollutants.

Denmark leads Europe in candle consumption, and scented candle sales are booming at an annual growth rate of 22%. Who knew that making the air smell like vanilla bean could come with a side of danger?

What’s even more alarming? Candles emit ultrafine particles (UFPs) smaller than what your frying pan produces. These tiny particles, measuring a mere 7-8 nanometers, could easily masquerade as a health hazard. Burning a candle for just two hours daily can contribute a staggering 58% to indoor UFP pollution. Yes, you read that right—more than cooking pork.

In fact, 75% of the Danish population burns candles two or more times a week, highlighting just how prevalent this cozy habit is. Research suggests that these emissions can lead to severe health risks. UFPs are linked to increased mortality from lung and cardiovascular diseases, with everyday candles identified as the leading source of indoor air pollution.

So, while you’re indulging in the warm glow of your favorite scented candle, consider this: you might be breathing in something more akin to diesel exhaust than a cozy hug.

Even worse, the air quality standards are routinely exceeded when candles are lit. PM10 and PM2.5 levels spike dramatically, often surpassing established guidelines.

Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) join the party, and let’s be honest, nobody invited them.

Sure, occasional use in a ventilated space might seem harmless, but heavy use? That’s a different story. Poor ventilation turns that night of relaxation into a mini pollution chamber.
