Everyday, countless drivers think they can handle a little chat while cruising down the road. They believe they’re multitasking champions, effortlessly balancing a conversation with the demands of the road. Spoiler alert: they aren’t.
Talking on the phone increases accident likelihood by 2.2 times. Dialing? That raises the risk by a staggering 12.2 times. And let’s not even get started on texting. Texting while driving boosts accident probability by a jaw-dropping 23 times.
Every year, distracted driving contributes to 1.6 million crashes. Yes, million. To put it bluntly, that’s 421,000 injuries from texting-related crashes alone. And for teenagers? They’re particularly vulnerable. A shocking 1,600 of them lose their lives annually due to texting crashes. That’s 11 teenage lives snuffed out daily.
While adults like to think they’re wiser, 77% believe they text safely while driving. Yet, 56% admit to using their phones despite claiming they’re safe behind the wheel. That’s a classic case of “I’m better than you” with a side of denial.
Only about 10% of adults manage to have full texting conversations while driving, but let’s face it: even the hands-free calls lead to inattention blindness. Drivers might as well be driving with blindfolds on.
And when it comes to eye movement? Texting results in a staggering 400% more time with eyes off the road. A single text takes five seconds to read, which is like driving the length of a football field at 55 mph without looking. Texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving. Talk about a recipe for disaster! Distracted driving accidents account for 25% of car accident deaths, highlighting just how deadly this behavior can be.
Almost 660,000 drivers use their phones at any given moment. It’s a wonder there aren’t more accidents. Distracted driving is linked to 26% of traffic crashes.
